Symbolises an aspect of the early interaction between two cultures.
In 1984 a tribute to Yagan in the form of a Bronze statue was unveiled on Heirisson Island.
Yagan was the son of Midgegooroo, who belonged to a tribal group of aboriginals that occupied a tract of land south of the Swan and Canning River in an area referred to as Beelier. Yagan and his friends continued to defend their territory but in 1832 were overpowered. Yagan and his companions were imprisoned on Carnac Island. The head of Yagan was brutally hacked from the body and taken to England by Ensign Dale and exhibited. On 1 September 1997 a delegation of Nyoongar elders brought back Yagan's head 'kaat' to country. This led to vandalism of the statue. His kaat has been buried in a memorial park in July 2010 so that his spirit can become whole again.
