Statewide Lge Timber Str Survey | Completed | 11 Dec 1998 |
• The place was built as part of the first stage of the spur railway line to Gnowangerup, and eventually to Ongerup, to develop and service the agricultural community in that area of the wheatbelt.
• The place has aesthetic value due to its picturesque rural setting.
• The place is representative of the type of railway bridge constructed in the early part of the 20th century.
The place is a single track, 90.14 metre bridge of rough sawn timber construction. The piles, bearings and decking are all timber. Abutments have been constructed of timber, earth and stone. Some steel reinforcement (in the form of piles and bearers) is evident in the central span.
From 1906, members of the Gnowangerup community began to campaign for the construction of a spur line from the Great Southern Railway into their district to facilitate the development of grain production in the area. The Gnowangerup Railway Station Archival Record states: Broomehill was first chosen as the location of the new line. However, in 1908 locals were informed that it was the policy of Government Railways to establish spur lines every 30 miles forcing the Progress Association to choose another location for the spur. Representatives from neighbouring towns, including Albany, met to discuss possible routes for the railway. It was eventually decided that Tambellup would be put forward as the starting point of the spur line. In February 1911, the State Government passed the Tambellup-Ongerup Act authorising the construction of the line. Contractors Messrs. Vincent Bros. began construction of the railway in September 1911. The first stage of the line from Tambellup to Gnowangerup was opened on 1 July 1912, and the second stage to Ongerup was opened on 6 January 1913…The total cost of its construction was 128,000 pounds.
