Statement of Significance

The church has aesthetic significance for it's general design quality as an example of inter-war ecclesiastical architecture using Gothic Style and detailing. Historic and social significance representing the ongoing history of the presence of the Roman Catholic Church in the community since the 1850's. Of particular significance to the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the State of WA.

Physical Description

St Joseph's Church and Presbytery comprises a double volume brick and tile Church with prominent corner tower in the Inter War Gothic style. The Church is a good example of a building designed in the Inter War Gothic Style and is typical of a number built during the 1920s and 1930s in Perth. The quality of the overall design and detailing such as the pressed cement work raises it above the norm. The ceiling design is also unusual in that it is of plaster and not timber, and for the incorporation of acoustical panelling.

History

The foundation stone was laid on the 5th November 1933 by Archbishop Clune and was opened and blessed by him in August 1934, is last official ceremony before his death in 1935. The church was designed by E leB Henderson whose family belonged to the parish. A new white Carrar marble altar was erected in the church in 1964. The church was renovated in 1984. St Joseph Parish Subiaco was created in 1901 with FR Patrick Verling appointed Parish Priest. The first St Joseph's Church was constructed of stone in 1897 n the site of St John of God Hospital.
