Statement of Significance

The Post Office building has aesthetic significance as a public building containing some of the original features in the Federation Arts and Crafts style. It is s landmark in the city of Armadale The building has historic significance as an example of the work of the Public Works Department of WA under the direction of Chief Architect George Temple Poole. Social significance representing the provision of public facilities such as postal services to Armadale from the late 19th Century.

Physical Description

A single storey painted brick and terracotta tile hipped and gabled roof. The façade now features an arched entrance arcade.

History

The design of the Post Office is accredited to George Temple Poole who was chief architect of the Public Works Department from 1885 to 1897. The building contains some of the original post office and residence fabric dating from 1898 but has undergone a number of alterations from the original. The building is no longer used as a post office but is the headquarters of the Armadale Region Business Association. The building is one of only five pre- World War I buildings remaining along Jull Street. The building has been a prominent and distinctive feature of the streetscape at the western end of Jull Street for over a hundred years.
