Community & Child Health Centre 34 Paget Street Community and Child Health Centre was constructed in 1955/56 as the Hilton Infant Health Centre by the City of Fremantle. Additions had been made to the centre by c. 1990 to accommodate an expanded community health service. A small single storey red brick and iron building with aluminium framed doors and windows.

Hilton Infant Health Centre was built in 1955/56 with financial assistance from the State Government. By c. 1900, high rates of maternal and infant death gave rise to considerable interest in mother and child health. A lack of trained midwives and poor maternal practices were blamed, and the Public Health Department established the Midwives Registration Board in an attempt to counter the trend. Visiting nurses were also paid by the Department to help ‘train’ mothers in infant health care. However, there was still no organized provision of child health services. In 1920, the Silver Chain Nursing Association established rooms in Kalgoorlie, and the Children’s Protection Society established a pilot infant health clinic in Perth at about the same time.
