Statement of Significance

The early simple and standardised form of the building, constructed as a school is still discernible despite accretions – a form used at Greenough and elsewhere. The building has architectural significance as a rare surviving example of an early school building and historical significance through its association with the early life of the district. The building is held in high regard by the local community.

Physical Description

stone walls, timber addition at rear, circa 1853. Considerable alterations and additions since 1850's. A stone building, originally constructed as a school in c.1853, now altered and extended with a verandah across the front and timber additions at the rear. The building additions derive from the varied use as a church and police quarters. The road close to the front of the building was originally called Pensioner Terrace, commemorating the first settlers at Freshwater Bay. Pensioner Guards were granted 9 acres of land at Butler’s Swamp, now Lake Claremont. Transport up the river, prior to road and railway landed near this building. Convicts were also stationed in the vicinity – hence the early misnomer of “depot” attached to this building.
