Austin Street, Cue, between Paterson Street and Robinson Street demonstrates a gold mining townscape of the turn of the century which has changed very little over the years. The street contains a number of notable buildings such as, the Government Offices, the Gentlemen's Club/ the three hotels - Murchison Club Hotel, former Cue Hotel and Capitol Hotel, and the former Bank of New South Wales together with the Bandstand in the centre of the street. The street is a demonstration of life in the early days of the state where a community based on gold mining lived for a time in a remote and arid environment. Its historical significance lies in the discovery of gold in the district by Tom Cue in 1891, the exploitation of alluvial gold until its exhaustion by about 1893 and the subsequent prosperity of some of the premier deep mines of the state - Cue No. 1, The Light of Asia/ The Golden Stream and the Hidden Treasure among others. The street representing the hub of the Town has environmental importance presenting verandahed shop facades linking the notable buildings-to a unified streetscape. NOTE: The Masonic Hall and the Government Offices have previously been Classified
