Statement of Significance

The new Shire Administration Centre has aesthetic, historical and social significance. The building is one in a series of buildings housing the local government for the Kojonup district. The earliest Road Board meetings were held in a room at Elverd's Hotel after 1871 when a separate Kojonup Board, as distinct from the Katanning and Broomehill Boards, was formed. The venue changed to the Kojonup Inn, and then to the Royal hotel before moving to a meeting room at the rear of the Agricultural Hall, built in 1897 (now demolished). Separate Road Board Offices were built on Albany Road in 1909 (now part of the Kojonup Women's Club). Later the Road Board used a section of the Kojonup Memorial Hall, completed in 1926. In 1971 new Shire Council Offices were constructed in the site of the present building. Additions and alterations were made to the premises in 1992, resulting in the present modern Shire Administration Complex.

Physical Description

This modern Shire Administration Centre is located in the hub of Kojonup town centre on Albany Highway. The building is a blend of natural face brick and rendered, painted brickwork. A gabled porch area covers the main entrance, and a verandah across the front elevation is supported by sturdy mortared brick piers. The building is the home of the Shire Offices and the Public Library. The gardens are landscaped, mainly with indigenous plants. Alongside the building is the Hillman Park and sundial, a distinctive feature of Kojonup.
