Statement of Significance

: Goldfields Group Hotel is a fine representative example of the Federation Free Classical Style. Goldfields Group Hotel contributes positively to the streetscape of Piesse Street with its verandah that extends over the pavement, and for its masonry 'wall' built to the building line.

Physical Description

: A single-storey building built to the building line of Piesse Street in the Federation Free Classical style (Apperly et al, 1989: 104-107). The facade features decorative stucco work and a decorative parapet employing classical motifs. The building also has a bullnosed verandah roof supported on slender posts that extends across the facade and over the pavement.

History

The Federation Free Classical style was common throughout Western Australia during the gold boom. Buildings constructed in the early 1900s in Perth, Fremantle and towns in the goldfields expressed the confidence that accompanied the dynamic growth of settlements in Western Australia following gold discoveries in the goldfields. The style was used Australia-wide but, in particular, in Western Australia during the 1890s and early 1900s. The Hotel was built by Mr W J Rabbesh proprietor, who was to become the third Mayor of Boulder (Boulder's Hidden Secrets, 1993). The Insurance Plans for Boulder c. 1900 illustrate that Lot 32 was occupied by the Goldfields Group Hotel (a brick building with front verandah) and a brick outbuilding with an iron verandah where rooms were located.
