The Denmark Hotel has historic and social heritage significance. Despite being built in the 1920s most of the built character of the hotel has been seriously compromised by additions and changes to both the outside and internal features. The hotel was not even considered in the first round of heritage place nominations by the Denmark community in 1999. However, the long association with the town and its contribution to recreation and entertainment for both local residents and visitors alike contribute to the story of the development of Denmark.
The 1920s character of the hotel is very difficult to see from the riverside road of the hotel. The addition to the facade hides any of the original features. What can be seen is a two storey brick building with a hipped roof and broken backed verandah roof. The verandah extends across the facade. The ‘pergola’ has now been enclosed with aluminium framed windows that totally block the original hotel facade. In the 1930s staff accommodation was added to the hotel and then later motel units were also added. A pergola was the last addition, made to the river side of the building in the 1990s.
The Denmark Hotel was built by a Mr Rawlings from Narrogin with the help of a local resident Mr Partridge. The hotel owner was Jack Clark a settler from Scotland who had arrived in Denmark c1911. Mr Clark was also the owner of Edinboro (Edinburgh) House c1940.
