Statement of Significance

This Victorian weatherboard cottage built before 1901 was the home of councillor John (Jean) Paraskeva Doscas who vied with William Zimpel of "Pine Lodge" for taking credit in applying for the pine trees to be planted in John Street in 1904.

Physical Description

"Sparta", A Victorian weatherboard cottage built between 1896 and 1903. It has a gabled iron roof with bull-nosed verandah. The chimney stack is corbelled. The decorative frieze to the verandah has elaborately turned spindles and fretted brackets. There are small decorative brackets under the eaves. The boards to the side and forward thrusting section are of plain Victorian profile, those under the verandah are rusticaled. The verandah posts are turned. The doors/windows on to the verandah are french windows. The front garden is marked by a tall palm tree. A plain high picket fence and vegetation screen the house from the street. Bullnose awnings are over the exposed windows to the east. There has been an extension to the skillion at the rear.
