This soak is significant as part of the York to Goldfields Heritage Trail.
The soak is set approximately 6km West from the Westonia townsite in a natural setting of tranquil beauty with great historical significance and as a resting place from York to Kalgoorlie. There is an outcrop of granite rocks in close proximity. The well is also fenced in a cleared area surrounded by newly painted trees. The stonework is an example of a dry stone wall construction in a circular fashion. The watering holes were presumably used by Aboriginals before CC HUnt excavated and lined them with the help of convict labourers. There is water in this well of an unkown depth.
Surveyor General Septimus Roe was the first European to explore the region when in 1838 he travelled within 80km of what now is Southern Cross. Charles Cook Hunt opened the eastern interior, leading expeditions from 1864-1866, making pastoral tracks and sinking wells. The tracks and wells that he left proved vauable when gold was discovered in the Yilgarn district. Henry King also surveyed this area from York to Kalgoorlie in 1889 by the markings HK 145 on the maps.
