Statement of Significance

The stone cottage has local aesthetic significance for its contribution to the town character and as an example of how successful restoration of Northampton's small miner's cottages can be. It also has Social and historic significance for its associations with miners and the nearby Wanerenooka mine.

Physical Description

Rendered stone cottage with CGI roof and new extension at rear in a similar character. The cottage has been restored progressively over recent times in a manner sympathetic to Northampton's town character. Some minor elements could be more accurate but on the whole the cottage provides an excellent example of what can be done to restore and preserve the original fabric and provide a residence of value in today's market. It is of interest to recall Feilman's original comments about the place and witness the success of meeting those recommendations: "condition - deteriorated, integrity - unsympathetic alterations to exterior, recommendation - restore exterior, upgrade interior, retain as historic building type".

History

The cottage in Howe Street is believed to be one of several remaining cottages in the area built for/by miner's who worked at the nearby Wanerenooka Mine Site (Site No. 42). The land was purchased in 1891 by David Williams. In 1894 C.T. Cripps built the house for his mother-in-law Mary Williams, who died in 1909. Following Charles and Margaret Cripps's deaths in April and October 1923, their daughter Rebecca Rayner owned the house. In 1934 the house was owned by J.J. Harrison, and in c1938-40 it was bought by Gus Hosken.
