Statement of Significance

36 Vancouver Street, Bangor House, has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons: It was the family home of John and Margaret Robinson. John Robinson was well-known and successful banker, merchant, developer and dynasty founder, and his sons were Albany lawyer and politician R. T. Robinson, and merchant Herbert Robinson. The place is a fine, well executed example of the Victorian Regency style of architecture enhanced by its prominent corner location and is one of Albany’s substantial gracious residences from this period reflecting the social standing of its original owner. The place is one of a group of houses/buildings in the historically important Vancouver Street as well as Parade Street that have heritage value both individually and as part of a streetscape.
