History

The Health Board and Progress Association promoted the establishment of a hospital in Moora. In 1908 all the schools were closed and a hessian hospital camp was set up to deal with the diptheria epidemic which swept through Moora. A public meeting was held in the Agricultural Hall in 1909 and the government offered a 50:50 grant. The "District hospital" was built on government land and the first building included 1x4 & 2x1 bed wards, 1 theatre and auxillary rooms. The hopital was officially opened on the 9th August 1911, as a measles epidemic in Moora again forced the closure of schools. In 1912, government funding provided staff quarters and in 1915 the maternity wing was added. Post war fund raising and the Moora Hospital Talkies Committee provided hospital facilities. In 1933, new nurses quarters were constructed and in 1937, a maternity wing and other extensions were done. after a special campaign instigated by Matron Norrish, x-ray machine were acquired. In the 1950's extensive rennovatons took place to upgrade the hospital facilities; new theatre block, casualty, x-ray department, mortuary, staff dining room, storage and nurse quarters. The Myles Memorial Arch in the driveway at the entrance tot he hospital commemoates Dr Myles.
