• The place represents an example of a timber weir constructed to manage saltwater flow on the Capel River in the mid- twentieth century.
• The place provides an example of the water management techniques implemented to ensure the health of the Capel River and the agricultural area it serves.

Physical Description

The place comprises a timber pier and penstock; the extant fabric of the c.1950 weir across the Capel River. Historically the weir also comprised further timber piers and stop boards which were raised and lowered to regulate water flow. However, much of this fabric is understood to have been removed a number of years ago.

History

The Capel area and its surrounds are the traditional lands of the Wardandi Noongar people. Their territory ranged form the coast to the hinterland with the Wardandi using the resources of the Capel River. In 1836 exploration of the Vasse area resulted in the British discovering the Capel River which John Bussell named after his cousin Capel Carter. Comprising approximately 9,000 acres, Location 41, west of the town of Capel, was initially taken up by Governor Stirling. However, when Stirling resigned in 1837 he made an agreement with yeoman John Scott that he would fulfil the requirements on his estate. After 1840 some of the land from Stirling’s Estate was purchased by the Western Australian Land Company.
