Statement of Significance

Although low key, the commercial building is an important part of the streetscape of Tudor Street and makes an contribution to the visual character of this important streetscape with its pedimented parapet and building form. The place is aesthetically linked with Butterick's Buildings '1912' on Tudhoe Street with its with its unifying theme of decorative parapet.

Physical Description

The single-storey buildirg comprising two shops, is built to the tuilding line of Tudor Street for commercial use. The walls of the building ihave narrow pitesiers that divide the facade into bays. The northern most shop is divided into three bars of equal size, with a recessed entry in the central! bay. The southern most shop is divided into two bays of differing size, the recessed entry is in the narrower bay aga nst the end wall on the northern side. The feature of "he exterior is a rendered parapet that extends across the facade. The pilasters extend beyond the height of the walls :o the parapet. The parapet has a triangu ar oediment in the centre of the northern most shop which emphasis the entry. The parapet bears the name of a former owner and occupier, 'Cresswells Handy Stores'. The shopfronts have been replaced with a uminium frames in ar unauthentic composition. A suspended metal lean-to awning roof extends across the facade over the pavement.
