Statement of Significance

The place is representative of the first phases of development along Grand Promenade.

Physical Description

Brick house with corrugated iron hip roof with peak vents and a gable over the projecting front room. The projecting section has a canopy over a pair of double hung wooden sash windows and another pair open onto the front verandah which has a separate roof supported on full height turned wooden posts. Another canopy is featured over the French doors midway down the western side approached by cement steps from the driveway. Two prominent corbelled brick chimneys with double hooped covers project through the roof. The tuck pointed brickwork of the front is relieved by rendered cement bands at sill and mid-window height and the windows have decorative cement scrollwork underneath. A solid fence constructed along Grand Promenade obstructs views to the dwelling.

History

This house was built by William Hay in 1912 and was one of only three houses in Grand Promenade at the time. This was an isolated part of the district at the time of its construction with no built roads. The cheapness of the land was the attraction for the original owner, whose grandson recalls that the bricks for the house had to be carted, with great difficulty, from the Peninsula Brickworks.
