Keysbrook has some social, historic and aesthetic value being an early example of a homestead cottage in the Keysbrook district and from its association with the Key and Tonkin family.
Four-roomed cottage reminiscent of Victorian Georgian style, featuring symmetrical facade, med-high pitched hipped roof with separate skillion verandah roof. The cottage is situated near the Keys and Myara Brooks, adjacent to busy South Western Highway. An Olive tree (5) grove and pear tree mark the entrance. The bricks in the walls (internal and external) are fretting and attempts have been made to render the walls, with limited success.
Taking the same name as the district which was named after the Key family who first purchased land in the area in 1862. Edward Key Snr purchased and obtained pastoral leases in the area and managed these until his death in 1879. These parcels of land then became the responsibility of Thomas Key who extended the leasable area and purchased more land in what is known as Keysbrook. The four Key sisters inherited the holding upon Thomas’s death at the age of 37 in 1885. In 1912, Matthew Edward Tonkin purchased Keysbrook Farm, which he had been managing for the Key sisters since 1910. He worked in the district with bullock and horse teams.
Modifications: Leant-to at rear to enclose bathroom; roof covered with corrugated iron; cement floors; and cement rendering of internal and external walls.
