House, 396 High Street, is a single storey limestone and iron house dating from 1906. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical building stock located within the residential areas of Fremantle. It is historically significant as a representation of typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.
House, 396 High Street is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron house with a symmetrical facade designed as an example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with painted brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with tiles. The façade is asymmetrical with two timber framed double hung sash windows and a door to the side. The verandah is under the same tiled roof supported by brick pillars. There is a rendered corbelled chimney evident. To the rear are further additions and buildings, that do not detract from the original front elevation.
The street was named by Surveyor General Roe-as was customary in English towns, the main street of the town was named High St. Eastward from William St the roadway was completed by convict labour after Town Hall was built in 1887. High St around the Town Hall closed to traffic in 1966. The High St Mall was trialed in Nov 1973 and made a permanent pedestrian mall in 1975. In 1906/07 there was a cottage on Lot 1487 and Lot 1486 had stables. Both lots were owned by Frederick William Smith and George Catterton Smith. In 1921/22 the cottage and stables were owned by Frederick Smith. The stables were no longer there in 1927/28. By 1941/42 ownership had changed to Olga Lincoln Anderson who still resided at the house in 1947. The place is now (2005) a vet's surgery.
