Statement of Significance

The place has little aesthetic value due to extensive alterations which have diminished their significance. Pingelly Supermarket contributes to the streetscape of Parade Street with its metal lined parapet that is aesthetically linked to the shops opposite. It is also significant for its continuity of use. Community Craft Centre has significance for is form - recessed shop front and skylights, and continuity of use.

Physical Description

The shops comprise three premises, 'Christian Book Nook', 'Community Craft Centre', and 'Pingeily Supermarket'. All shops are in an altered state. The most intact example is the centre shop, 'Community Craft Centre'. 'Christian
Book Nook' has a new brick facade with aluminium framed sliding windows divided into small panes. A new metal awning extends across the facade over the pavement. The shop has a parapet lined with sheet metal that is in poor condition. The building has been extended and the gable roof returns to the south elevation with a gable end. The south elevation is now clad with fibro-cement sheeting. 'Community Craft Centre' has a timber framed shopfront with circular Iron columns with large glazed panes and fanlights divided into smaller panes. Many fanlights are now covered with ripple-iron, and some panes contain coloured glass. The walls of the facade are painted brickwork laid in English bond. The roof of the building is supported by five columns supported by timber struts that run the length of the centre of the building. The interior
of the shop features four skylights and pressed metal ceilings. The interior walls are painted. The shopfront of 'Pingelly Supermarket' is considerably altered. A new metal awning extends across the shop and over the pavement. The shop has a large curved parapet lined with sheet metal. The interior retains its pressed metal ceilings and roses, and features two large skylights. The interior floor has been covered in concrete.

History

During the 1890s and particularly in the early 1900s, Pingelly's population was swelled by a steady influx of men from the goldfields seeking employment and somewhere to settle. The expanding population was further supplemented by the arrival of numerous immigrants during 1910-12 This increase in population had a great influence on the town's growth. It necessitated the survey of more town and suburban lots, increased subsidies for road construction and numerous buildings were constructed.
As the main town of Pingelly became established, the main shopping area was in Park Street west. However, Parade Street eventually took over with larger shops such as Grace Bros.
