Shop & House (fmr), 115-117 South Terrace, is a typical limestone, brick and iron double storey building dating from c 1915. The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of a commercial building in the Fremantle area.
Shop & House (fmr), 115-117 South Terrace is a limestone, brick and iron double storey shop and residence constructed in c1915. The walls are limestone with brick quoins to the ground and upper floors (the upper floor has had an intrusive render removed as part of the recent conservation works.) The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron. There is one chimney with rendered corbelling visible from the street. Windows are timber framed, fixed pane with two highlight panes above to the ground floor and double hung sashes to the upper floor. Some of the windows were reinstated to match the originals as part of the recent works. The building is located on a street corner with a truncated corner containing the front door. The building is located on both street boundary lines with a footpath in front.
In 2008/09 the building underwent an extensive conservation process, including the reinstatement of previously removed double storey verandahs.
A Heritage Assessment was prepared in June 2009 by Carrick + Wills Architects for a DA submission to Council (DA218/09) for proposed introduction of signage elements to the building for the current commercial occupier.
Shop & House (fmr), 115-117 South Terrace was built c. 1915. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated c. 1910 shows vacant land (although there had been cottages on the lot previous to this – dating back to c. 1898). By 1924, the shop and residence were owned by Henrietta Hunt, a married woman from Corrigin.
Ms Hunt went bankrupt in 1931 (one of the many casualties of the Great Depression). By 1945, ownership had passed to Emelius de Luca, a cook from Fremantle. However, the property was soon sold to Pasquale D’Antonio (?sp), a prospector from Day Dawn.
The external staircase was added in 1961. By 1968, ownership had passed to Jasper and Doris Williamson. Bill Williamson Motors operated from 117 South Terrace at this time.
In 1978, West Coast Speed Equipment was the occupant of shop. In 1980, ownership passed to Ernest Hodder, a medical practitioner.
This place was included in the list of heritage places in the City of Fremantle identified by the Fremantle Society (1979/80) - PURPLE - of architectural and historic significance in its own right.
