Inclusion in the Shire's Town Planning Scheme No. 4 means a local recognition and measure of protection of the heritage value of a place. Full implications of inclusion into the Town Planning Scheme No. 4 are outlined in appendix 1. Should a development application be received for a place, an assessment of the appropriateness of development would be made. Professional advice and consultation would be available, from the Heritage Council of WA, through the Wheatbelt Heritage Adviser, the Shire or specialised consultants, to inform property owners of development options should it be appropriate.

Statement of Significance

The place is unusual due to being constructed during the Depression. It demonstrates associations with leading identities of the period and represents a sense of place for generations of Miling people. It is a significant streetscape element and integral within the townscape and charcter of Miling.

Physical Description

The hotel is a double storey brick construction with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The building fronts two streets and truncates the corner, with a gable detail on the roof. The first floor verandah and lower collonnade are intact. The verandah features double column support detail and decorative bracket detail. The street level facade id rendereddd to dado height.

History

There was some local opposition to the hotel in Miling, but it proceeded, and was opened on 19th December 1934, in the middle of the Great Depression (in time for Christmas). Very little construction was taking place anywhere in Australia at that time. Paddy Connelly had the hotel built. He was a race horse owner and hotel entrepreneur of some repute (Narembeen Hotel 1923, Kalamunda Hotel 1927).
