The site of Peak Hill is associated with a gold find in 1892, and subsequent development of a town, and railway associated with manganese mining in 1927, although the demise of the town occurred with the failure of the manganese company in 1933.
Peak Hill comprised:
Townsite
Palace Hotel
Peak Hill camp
Horseshoe lights mine
Ilgari Mines- main & North east
Bulloo Downs Mine
Gold was discovered at Peak Hill in September 1892 and by 1900 the town had a population of 800, with post and telegraph office, Warden's court, school, Miners' Institute and a State battery. The main mines were Horseshoe Lights, Ilgari Main, Ilgari Northeast and Bulloo Downs. Peak Hill got a railway siding in 1927, when a private line was built to Horseshoe for the transport of manganese, but the Manganese Company went into receivership in 1933 and the line ceased to function.
