Significant landmark. It has a significant association with Roe and the early days of the Colony, as well as the descendants of Roe and the explorers.
In 1848 John Septimus Roe, the first Surveyor General in the Swan River Colony, led an exploration party east of the Darling Ranges. On day 51 of the expedition, on 29 October 1848 he named Mt Madden after the then Colonial secretary, Dr Richard Madden. On 22 October 1982, J.E. Roe, the great grandson of Roe, unveiled a plaque commemorating the 134th anniversary of the expedition. Descendants of Private Buck, a member of the original exploration party, lived in the region until recently. More recently, surveyors placed a steel peg at the summit & there is an aircraft beacon as the east west jets pass over.
