History

The suburban development of Palmyra occurred from 1900 to the 1920s. This was mainly due to numbers of Fremantle workers wanting cheaper residential lots and looking to the growing Melville area. The first block of Palmyra were made available for public sale in 1903, and more lots were released in subsequent years. By 1914, 138 houses had been constructed in the new suburb, which was located conveniently close to East Fremantle. With the increased population of the area came the demand for schooling for the children of the workers’ families. In c. 1915 a new school was constructed in the suburb in McKimmie Road. In 2003, this school continues to operate.
