Category 3

A place of some/moderate cultural heritage significance to City of Gosnells. No constraints. Recommend: Conservation of the place is desirable. Any alterations or extensions should reinforce the significance of the place, and original fabric should be retained wherever feasible. Encourage retention of the place, and document the place if retention is not possible.

Statement of Significance

The place has historic value for its association with the period in which Gosnells was predominantly a farming district.
The place has aesthetic and social value as a demonstration of the type of house constructed in the inter-war years.

Physical Description

A single storey brick and iron residence with leaded casement windows and a rendered band extending around the façade. The roof extends down to form the verandah canopy supported on masonry piers with Doric styled columns in the upper section.

History

This house is likely to have been built to support a family running a small landholding. The original part of the house was built in c1905 and a 1920s addition included the front rooms and possibly the side verandah. This addition in the 1920s demonstrates the development of the Canning River lands for agriculture, particularly orchards and dairying to support the growing population in Perth and its suburbs.

An aerial photograph of the property in 1953 shows that this residence was relatively isolated and surrounded by fruit trees with several small outbuildings to support this rural lifestyle. In recent years the house has been obscured by dense mature trees.
