This two storey painted brick and tile residence, in the InterWar
Functionalist style, has cultural significance because:
the place has historical associations with Laura Lee Steere, a well
knownPeppermint Grove identity, and AllenG Tomlinson,
business-man and winner of the 1938Australian Grand Prix;
it is an attractive, technically accomplished and representative
example of the Perth variant of its style, in a prominent comer
location;
it is representative of the new urban lifestyle which followed the
Great Depression and the viewpoint of the third generation of the
suburb's residents;
the place is part of a cultural group and is a comer element in a
townscape area at the suburb's heart.
The place is notable, occupying one of the comer sites at the major
intersection in the suburb. It is in an InterWar style, which usually had
a flat roof. In Perth the style was generally modified with the addition
of a pitched roof, as in this case. The style became popular in the
InterWar period, as the precursor of the new urban lifestyle which was
expected after the Great Depression.
The design of the place is technically accomplished and is a good
example of its style in the Perth variation. It has a high degree of
integrity, which is comparatively unaffected by the sympathetic
additions.
The style of the place is representative of the new urban vision which
followed the Great Depression and the view point of the third
generation of residents.
The place was built for Laura Lee Steere, and she lived there for a
decade. She and Charles Lee Steere had lived at 7 View Street for 35
years and were well known Peppermint Grove identities. From 1955-
75 the place was later owned by Allen G Tomlinson, prominent
businessman and winner of the Australian Grand Prix in 1938.
Considerable historical significance.
The place is an important one as it represents the change in the social
outlook which came with the third generation of Peppermint Grove
residents.
