Statement of Significance

The place demonstrates a continuity of use as a communication and retail outlet for the town and surrounding district. The place demonstrates associations with the pioneers of the district

Physical Description

In the 1930s the store was a 12' x 10' corrugated iron shed with petrol case shelves
and fuel sold in 4 gallon drums. A lean to on the side of the store was the bedroom.

History

The Lake King Store and Post Office was opened in 1929 by an Englishman, Chris Verdun. In 1936, Ron Hewson took over the store with his young family, after working as a telephone linesman in the district for a number of years. The store was also the Lake King telephone exchange. Hewson ran a bi-weekly mail service to Hatters Hill (35 miles east of Lake King). Bob Barron (the first welder in the district) ran the mail and general cartage service from the Newdegate railhead to Ravensthorpe, and never charged Hewsons for the delivery of their supplies. In 1942, Mr & Mrs W (Dusty) Rhodes took over the PO & Store after living at Hatter's Hill for 8 years. Dusty Rhodes was also the school bus-driver. Later Tom Warneford from Lake Varley took over the store and refurbished the place, and his sons continued until 1976 when Ian Brown took over.
