Physical Description

Timber framed single storey residence with fibro panelling, metal hipped roof and extensive verandah. The verandah is of stumped construction with timber retaining and accessed via brick steps. The canopy is open to the underside, supported on timber columns and has a non-original timber balustrade. The property features timber framed casement windows and Georgian style French doors with a large brick chimney with brick corbelling.

History

The property was originally part of the large landholding of 1000 acres granted to John Septimus Roe in 1844 which was transferred to Robert Henry Rose in 1881. The property remained in the Rose family until c1907 when it was transferred to John Samuel Gibbs of Roelands. The physical form of the building suggests it was built in the early 20th century which would coincide with its purchase by John Gibbs.

The property was transferred to his son Barnett Beveridge Samuel Gibbs and his wife, Glancia. Their home was known as 'Battlescombe' at this time.

The Gibbs family retained the property until 1931 when it was transferred to Arthur Evans Jackson (1879-1939). This is when the name 'Chenar' is first seen in contemporary documents. Arthur Jackson was a prominent Perth businessman and 'Chenar' was a well respected cattle stud farm during his ownership. The alternate spelling 'Chenour' is a later alternative of the name.
