The cairn is of historic importance being the survey point for survey of the area. This site offers spectacular views of the Merredin district. To the south-west is the town of Merredin, to the north is the site of the original Merredin townsite and stretching east is a 2,800ha (7,000 ac) bushland reserve with granite sentinels rising above it, a scene relatively unchanged since viewed by the earliest explorers.
Located near the highest point of Merredin Peak is a cairn of stones placed by Assistant Surveyor King during his 1889-90 expedition. King made trigonometrical surveys from the top of the highest peaks in the area, marking the point on his map with his initials and a number - in this case 189 - and the actual position with a sapling placed in the centre of a stone cairn.
