Cartwright's House

Statement of Significance

This building has historical significance as the second National Bank building in Kojonup and social significance as the residence of the Cartwright family who relocated the building and lived there for many decades and were important identities in the local shearing industry.

Physical Description

The fibre-cement and corrugated iron clad building with a corrugated iron gable roof, with the gable facing the street and vented. The original skillion verandah on the front façade has been partially enclosed with cement bricks and fibre cement sheeting and louvre windows on one side. Metal sun hoods (Inter-war style) have been installed over most windows and also across the front. An additional lean-to structure has been added at the back.

History

The building was transported to Kojonup from the Kalgoorlie goldfields around 1912-13, to become the National Bank. It was situated on Albany Highway on Lot No Pt 82, Diag 31736 Plan 2933. This was the second National Bank building for Kojonup after the town had moved further downhill owing to the establishment of the railway. The original NAB building was further uphill. It consisted of two front rooms used as a general office area and manager's office. The rear rooms were living quarters for the manager or staff. The Cartwright family purchased the building in 1936, moving it to the present site using a log and bullock team. Joshua and Jane Cartwright had 3 boys and 2 girls who all grew up in the house. Joshua migrated from the UK and worked for Main Roads when he moved to Kojonup. The Cartwright children became very much associated with the local shearing industry.

Modifications: The bank was moved fron the Kojonup business district and became a residence in its present position. However despite the move, most of its original fabric is intact.
