Statement of Significance

The site represents changes and davelopment in Bruce Rock. The site and place demonstrate associations with identities and pioneers. The association with the architect Marshall Clifton is significant.

Physical Description

Brick construction with a painted render finish. The roof is a low pitched gable with a flat roof entry verandah with brick column supports. It consists of a hall, supper room, kitchen, toilets and a rest room.

History

Opened on the 21st of August 1971 by Premier John Tonkin, the building cost $160,000. The site was previously occupied by Wally Johnson's cafe` called Johnson's Tearooms in the 1930's and later Ashby's Butcher shop in the late 1950's. RK Baker Agencies operated in the 1960's before it was the Butler Museum in the late 1960's before demolition in the 1970's. The rear of the shop was accommodation for single men.
When the Shire Hall on the adjacent site, was demolished in 1970, new administration offices replaced the hall on that site and it was necessary to provide a hall facility for the Bruce Rock community.
