MODERATE SIGNIFICANCE: Important to the heritage of the locality.

Statement of Significance

The Mullewa Police Station and Court House have some historic and social significance to the town of
Mullewa for their important role in the provision of law and order in the town since 1961. The building, which is
representative of of the architecture of its era, reflects the prosperity of the district at the time.

Physical Description

Set back from Mills Street on a gentle slope, the T-shaped building is of light cream brick construction, part
rendered, with a gable tiled roof. The Courthouse occupies the central part of the building with the offices on
both sides to the rear. As the site rises from the street, there are steps up the the central courthouse entry and
stairs to entries to the offices on either side. The courthouse has high set windows on both sides (north and
south). "Mullewa Court House" in black lettering is affixed to the gable end addressing Mills Street. A plaque
affixed to the building reads: "To commemorate the opening of this building on Friday, March 3rd, 1961, by
Hon David Brand, MLA, Premier of Westem Australia and Member for Greenough, Hon CC Perkins, MLA,
Minister for Police, Hon AF Watts, CMG, MLA, Attomey General."

History

The original Mullewa Courthouse was located on Gray Street and was a building which also served as a local
place of entertainment, with dances and social gatherings held there. In 1912 a Police Station was
constructed on the corner of Padbury Street and Mills Street. Both buildings served the town adequately until
the current 'modern' brick Police Station and Courthouse was opened in 1961. It was described at the time as
follows: "It is a fine building with a most imposing appearance and in keeping with the importance of the large
area it is designed to serve."
