History

After the murder of EJ Clarkson, by 3 aboriginal people at Dalbercutten in Kellerberrin in 1865, a Police Station was established at Youdegin. Constable Allerly was in charge with PC's McCourt, McCreery and Prairie.

In July 1872 the settlers asked for a mail service from Yourk, by way of Dangin and Carrloong to Mount Stilring and Youndegin.

In May 1880, Constable Eaton was appointed as a special constable and was responsible for patrolling the region south of Meckering and Cunderdin to Mt Stirling south of Kellerberrin. Another Special Constable (Thomas Adams) was appointed and based at Barbalin & Mukinbudin, his patrol was parrellel to Constable Eaton's. He visited shepherd and settlers and supervised the distribution of rations to aborigines. One of Constable Eaton's many duties was to deliver the mail by horse back. Other duties he performed were to tend to occassional prisoners at his gaol (a large York gumtree with rings to fasten to the trunk).

The discovery of gold brought camel trains and a steady flow of traffic trough Youndegin enroute to the Eastern Goldfields. However even with all this extra work, the Police Station ws closed in 1890 and Alfred Eaton and his family took up homestead blocks in the vicinity of the town. When the railway from Northam to Southern Cross was completed in 1894, Youndgin declined rapidly and the Eaton family became involved in carting chaff and sandalwood to the railway siding.
