Statement of Significance

The Three Springs Post Office has local significance for its role in providing communications for the district. Further, it is representative of public buildings of its era and has high streetscape value having a prominent corner location on the main street.

Physical Description

A square building constructed of rendered masonry with a hipped tile roof. A recessed entry porch in which the mail boxes are sited is enhanced by two concrete pillars. The north side of the porch has timber double entry doors. Windows are timber framed double hung with either 12 or 18 panes to the east. The south side has similar windows to the rear plus three slit windows to the section which forms the south wall of the entry porch. There is a corbelled chimney of rendered masonry with a terra-cotta chimney pot, to the north west.

History

From 1910 until the construction of the Post Office in 1939, mail services were provided at several stores and houses. The district's first automatic telephone exchange was installed in this building in 1940. (Source: History of Three Springs, p.5. Carridena, p.77) Privatised in 1995 to C.W. & S.J.
