Physical Description

‘’Ellendale Homestead is located in an attractive valley near Ellendale Pool on the Greenough River. The partly lime washed dark sandstone buildings date from the 1860s and have been built in various stages. The house has a long rectangular plan form with verandah’s along the west and south walls which are an extension of the main roof. The eastern end of the house is two storey and appears to have been built with the intention of extending across the single storey section but this has not occurred. The buildings have now fallen into disrepair and the roof over the first floor has partially collapsed ad the skillion roof over the lean to kitchen at the rear has also collapsed. Internal finishes comprise plastered walls with some canvas ceilings whilst others are boarded.’ ‘There are various stone out buildings nearby, including a dairy and some staff quarters but these are already in ruins. The property also has a private cemetery for several generations of the Logue family going back to the original owners. The cemetery is fenced to protect the marble head stone from damage by stock.’

History

‘Ellendale comprising 96, 000 acres was taken up by Mr Major Logue, who arrived in the colony in 1836. The Homestead was built in the 1860s for him and his wife. Three acres of orchard were planted near the banks of the Greenough River. In 1870 Mr Major Logue became the first member for Greenough when representative government was granted in Western Australia. After his death in 1901 the property was managed by Mr Kenneth Logue while Mr Major Logues daughters remained living at Ellendale. In later years the property was owned by Elizabeth Logue and her husband Edward Frederick Oliver and was subdivided and gradually handed over to their two sons who ran the estate as two separate entities of approximately 15, 000 acres each. The old Homestead has not been living in since 1953 and has fallen into disrepair.’
