The City of Fremantle has identified this place as being of considerable cultural heritage significance in its own right within the context of Fremantle and its conservation is a priority.

Statement of Significance

Commercial Building, 6 Parry Street, comprising a single storey plus basement level rendered building constructed 1913 has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:

the place is of historic significance as an example of a commercial building near the Fremantle Town Centre dating from the early decades of the twentieth century;
the place is a modest example of a commercial building in the Federation Free Classical style, with a stuccoed façade featuring a parapet and classical mouldings; and,
the place contributes to the predominantly Federation streetscape of Parry Street, and to the character of the Fremantle area.

Physical Description

Commercial Building, 6 Parry Street (1913) is a single storey plus basement level painted and rendered brick and Colorbond gabled roof former warehouse building with a symmetrical facade and designed as a late example of the Federation Free Classical style of architecture. The building is situated on the western side of the site and has a zero setback from the pavement at Parry Street.

There is a parapet which has a pediment with decorative stucco fronting the Colorbond clad roof. Due to the present use of the building the entrance is via the eastern side and the original entrance (metal doors not original) fronts Parry Street along with the original semi arched windows.

There is a verandah supported by timber posts, which has been added at some stage on the eastern elevation and the current shop entrance which is accessed via timber steps. Attached to this elevation is a row of brick garages built to the north of the site. There is bitumised parking area and brick piers and some Plumbago auriculata hedging surrounding the corner of the site.

A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Feb 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for a proposal including painting the building externally and removal internally of the timber stud walls and bulk head over the existing counter.

History

Built in 1913 for Jabez Gadsden (sometimes spelt Gadsen) who was a bag and sack manufacturer. In 1938/39 it was a warehouse occupied by G J Coles and Co Ltd. Coles moved to Perth in the 1950s and the property went to Biggin and Ayrton (WA) Pty Ltd, who were wool buyers. In 1970/71 ownership passed to the Swan Brewery Co Ltd.

A Heritage Assessment was prepared in Feb 2010 by the City of Fremantle for a DA submission to Council for a proposal including painting the building externally and removal internally of the timber stud walls and bulk head over the existing counter.
