Category 2

Buildings which also contribute to the character and atmosphere of Peppermint Grove. These buildings may be altered or extended in a manner which recognises and retains some original features or which may be demolished, but the replacement building should recognise by its position the adjoining residence and precinct. The owner to provide an archival record for any building demolished under this category and the Shire to provide a plaque for inclusion in the adjoining footpath to recognise the cultural significance of the property.

Statement of Significance

This single storey rendered brickwork and tiled residence, in
a much adapted InterWar California Bungalow style, has
cultural significance because:
it has historical associations with the Marfleet and
Barrie families, whilst latterly it has been associated
with Anthony Craig, a former Councillor and Shire
President;
it is part of a cultural group and is within a
townscape area.

History

The property was held apparently as an investment by the
Marfleet family, who were associated with real estate, until
purchased by the Barrie family. Subsequently the place was
owned and occupied by Anthony Craig, a former Councillor
and Shire President.

The place has been much adapted, much of it intrusively.
The place has a typical California Bungalow footprint.
The place is part of a cultural group.
The place is within a townscape area at the western end of
Irvine Street.
