Statement of Significance

The Post Office building has considerable historic and social significance for its important role in communications in the district. The building has considerable streetscape value given its prominent location and street frontage. The building is representative of country post office buildings in its size,
design and construction materials.

Physical Description

Located on the main street in the town the Post Office is a small square building of brick construction with a corrugated iron hipped roof. There is an entry porch to the front (north) elevation, via two steps, which features two brick columns and two small windows either side. Windows are timber framed and double hung. There is rendered banding painted cream immediately below the roofline.

History

The first postal service in the district operated from MacPherson Homestead from 1885. The Post Office moved to the Railway Station on 4 August, 1913 and Ihen to a residence in Yarra Street in 1915. In 1920 it transferred to the corner of Caron and MacPherson Streets and later to a stone building
opposite the Hotel. Official status was gained on 6 December, 1926. The site of the present Post Office was purchased on 21 May, 1928 and the building was officially opened on 30 June, 1932 by Senator P.J. Lynch. The building also functioned as a telephone exchange with one operator until 1948 after which
there were two operators. The telephone exchange closed on 3 November, 1976. The Post Office was downgraded in 1991 and currently operates in conjunction with a retail business. (Local Information Sheet & Heydon, p 182-187)
