South Hedland water tank is a landmark and is of significance in the development of South Hedland.
Standing 30 metres high, the tank has a capacity of 500,000 gallons, and is
visible from over 20 kilometres away.
In December 1975, a new $50,000 pressure tank and headway was completed for use in cells one and two of South Hedland, to allow for better water pressure during peak use periods. The tank was the second of its type constructed in Western Australia, with the first built in Mandurah earlier the same year.
The distinctive shape of the steel tank was designed to maximise its strength and minimise construction and maintenance costs.
