Statement of Significance

One of the few stone and brick turn-of-the-century cottages remaining in Cottesloe.

Physical Description

Victorian stone and brick cottage built prior to 1901 with brick side walls and quoins. The front is of
coursed random rubble limestone. A decorative feature is brick bracketting to support the guttering. Cast
iron lace remains alongside timber verandah posts which are chamfered. The paired windows are plain
glass, double hung with a decorative turned wooden section in between, plain window sills. Front door is
of Victorian style with two plain glazed, side lights. Unusually the front section of the Y shaped
iron/zincalume roof is hipped rather than gabled. The verandah is bullnosed iron/zincalume. An awning
shelters a pair of double hung windows. The plain brick chimney shafts have a small corbel. The
verandah floor is now red painted cement.

History

In 1905 George Hellier rented this from Bunning Bros who owned Briggs quarry as well as their timber interests. A
quarry, presumably Bunnings, was in the vicinity and the stone no doubt came from this.
