The site is important for its association with one of the town's early businesses and represents the
era when horse drawn transport gave way to motor vehicles.
Situated between the hotel and the bridge on the Albany Road and originally on land belonging to
the hotel site.
The first garage in Williams. It was built by George Brice (Hotel owner) and Pennequick.
Prior to this, the Narrogin Trading and Agency Company had, in 1926, erected the first petrol pump
in the township. This located near the footpath in front of their premises which faced the main
highway. Increasing numbers of motor vehicles appearing on the roads enticed Jack Longmore to
build a blacksmith shop and garage on a corner block near the post office. At that time little did he
realise the serious effect the depression was to have on his latest venture. Within a short period he
was forced to close up owing, and being owed much. (1)
Over the years the garage has had a number of owners (including Lou Fairhead and R (Bob) S Logie
before being sold to the Shell Oil Company (and has been extensively modified). Logie's moved to
other premises in the town and continued their mechanical repairs.
