Statement of Significance

The Nungarin Shire Council Office and Library building is historically important to the district. As the administrative centre for the municipality, it is the focus of our local identity.

Physical Description

The Nungarin Shire Office and Library building is constructed of dark brick in a simple rectangular style. The edifice is dominated by full height angled brick columns which protect the large windows on the north-east (front) and north-west (side).
The double glass doors at the front, open into the reception and general office area in the centre of the building. The Library and store-room open to the centre-right of the reception and office area, with the Chief Executive Officer's office to the front, and the Accountant's office at the rear.
The Council Chambers are accessed through a foyer area at the front-left, with kitchen, store-room and toilet facilities situated behind.
A commemorative plaque fixed to one of the brick pillars at the front of the building reads as follows:

A second plaque commemorates a Local Government Award, and reads as follows:
Western Australia Local Government Week Award 1981 Category 1 .A
This Local Government Week Award was presented by The Minister for Local Government The Hon.M.J.Craig MLA To the Shire of Nungarin, whish was adjudged by the Local Government Week Award Committee as
"The municipality which achieved the most improvement and
The greatest degree of progress in the provision of Local Government services and works. The award was based On the relative progress achieved and the work completed during the
2 year period ended the 31st December, 1980 for municipalities with a rating revenue below $300,000 and a population of 1350 or less"

History

The present Nungarin Shire Office and Library was officially opened on 12th December 1968, and is the third building to have functioned as the administrative centre for the local government area of Nungarin.
