Historic Value – Importance for the density of diversity of cultural features illustrating the human occupation and evolution of the locality. The site is of significance for its association with early local businesses that were established in Carnarvon.
Nothing remains of the original buildings that existed on the site. A number of well-known local identities were closely associated with the businesses.
The site was owned by Foss Tonkin, purchased on 26 May 1919. The premises were used as a blacksmith shop “FE Tonkin Wheelwright & Blacksmith’. Manufacturing and repairs of wagon wheels was carried out at the rear of the property. As this was the only blacksmith shop in town, camels and wagons would be lined up from where the Coral Coast Caravan Park is now situated, up Robinson Street and into Camel Lane on both sides of the streets. The site is now occupied by a Caltex Petrol Station.
