Statement of Significance

The site represents a oeriod in history for the indigenous people.

History

After the 1905 Aboriginal Act, the Aboriginal population in the Moora town increased. Between 1911 and 1913 the town population of Aboriginal people increase from 60 to 140 people (10% of the population). Moves were made in 1914 to relocate the Aboriginal settlement to Dandaragan, but they prohibited the Aboriginal people from living in that town at that time. In 1915, Dandaragan excluded Aboriginal people from sporting events and effectively removed the Aboriginals from the town, relocating them at Karramarra Well, 5 miles out of Dandaragan. The site for the Victoria Plains aboriginal people was the traditional camping ground at Mogumber, Palm Flats, on the Moore River. In 1917, approval was given to build the Moore River Native Settlement.

Moora's town camp was connected to the town water supply in 1960 and a new toilet block built in 1965. The Native Welfare Committee was formed in 1962 and established in Moora in 1965. The Shire erected the first of several timber framed transitional homes on a 9 acre site at lot 139 off Clarke Street. In 1978, the site was closed and the houses demolished and the occupants re-housed in State Housing Commission Homes in town.
