CONSIDERABLE SIGNIFICANCE: Very important to the heritage of the locality.

Statement of Significance

The Bank of NSW Fmr has some historic value as a banking premise which has operated in the town for many years. Prominently situated at the foot of Maitland Street, the building makes an important contribution to the built fabric of the town. Design features such as the symmetrical facade, the striped rendering to the corners and the tall stepped parapet, give the place aesthetic appeal.

Physical Description

The former Bank of NSW is a rendered brick building with a hipped tiled roof. The building fronts directly onto the footpath and has a symmetrical facade with a window set either side of a central entrance. The entrance is enhanced by a protruding rendered wall in a contrast colour with a stepped parapet which extends approximately 2 metres above the door highlight window. While the windows remain original as timber framed and double hung, the door has been replaced with an aluminium framed modern alternative. The windows have metal bars while the door has security grilles. A rendered chimney punctuated the northem roofscape.
The corners to the front facade feature a striped detailing reminiscent of the Art Deco style.

History

The building was originally occupied by the Bank of New South Wales. In 1992, its successor, Westpac, removed its service from Mullewa following which the building was used as an office base for a mining and exploration company in the town. It is presently used as an office and hosts MEEDAC (the MidWest Employment and Economic Development Aboriginal Corporation) and Centrelink.
