The site of the former AIM Hospital at Fitzroy crossing is very significant to the history of the development of medical services to the kimberley region and to the social history of the area.
A plaque erected as a memorial on the site
The idea of establishing a hospital at Fitzroy Crossing was first considered by the Australian Inland Mission 1922. The Fitzroy crossing Hospital was eventually established in 1939.
The two storey building has subsequently been demolished, however a plaque has been erected on the former hospital site as a memorial to the work carried out there. Sisters Margaret Coakes (Wells) and Alice Hall were the first of many AIM people to contribute to the service and care for the inland people provided by the hospital.
