The site of the first Dongara Bridge has historic significance for its connection to the development of transport routes in the district.
Some evidence of the original structure is visible to the west of the present bridge.
The original bridge was built in 1889 by Mr Grosse and Matthew Price Snr. It was a long timber structure with no infill from the river banks. The original bridge was demolished and a new bridge was built using concrete piers in 1964. Sir David Brand, Premier of Western Australia, officially opened the new bridge on 14/11/1964. The bridge approaches were washed away in the 1971 and 1972 floods and major repairs were undertaken. The structure suffered from concrete cancer and was closed for some time in 1975. The deck was upgraded in 1996.
