Statement of Significance

Miners Statue, 156 Throssell Street, Collie has cultural heritage significance for the following reasons:
• It is a memorial placed by a local community group in honour of coal miners.

Physical Description

The Miners Statue, 156 Throssell Street, is a bronze sculpture designed in 1988 to commemorate and honour coal miners in Collie. It is life sized and depicts a man wearing a coal miner’s hat and work wear. The statue sits in isolation in front of the Collie Tourist Bureau, and is therefore visible from a distance.

History

A plaque located at the base of the statue known as ‘The Coalminer’ states that it was ‘presented to the community of Collie by the Collie Apex Club as a Bicentennial Project. Unveiled by Alf Fogarty & Alan Blackhurst representing the coal industry of Collie 3 December 1988.’

Fogarty and Blackhurst were local men who had risen to senior executive positions in the coal mining industry in Collie.

The Shire of Collie Municipal Heritage Inventory 1996 suggests that a time capsule was buried beneath the memorial.
